Atopy, or atopic dermatitis, is the result of air-borne allergens such as pollens and dust mites contacting the skin and causing an allergic reaction.
We find atopy is particularly common in spring and summer, when pollen levels are at their highest. When people are having issues with hay fever and asthma, dogs are having skin issues.
The most common sites where we see atopy affecting dogs is the ears, groin, paws and armpits. Most cases of recurrent ear infections are in fact due to an underlying allergy.
