As the owner of a Golden Retriever, I know how fast some dogs eat. If I give my dog his food in a normal bowl, he finishes his meal in less than 10 seconds.

Eating too fast can create several problems including discomfort for the dog and increasing the risk of bloat.

Fortunately it’s easy to slow a dogs eating down.

The classic home remedies for fast-eating dogs include using a muffin tin, spreading the food out on a bin lid, or even putting large stones in the bowl to act as an obstacle for the dog (we strongly recommend you don’t do this).

For my dog, I have found a slow feeder bowl works very well. The bowl has multiple compartments, so the dog has to pick the food out of each area, slowing the eating right down. Using a slow feeder bowl, my dog takes over 90 seconds to eat his meal. A great improvement on 10 seconds.

Slow feeder bowls can be purchased at the Bunbury and Eaton Vet Clinics, and at South West Pets.
