When should my puppy get its vaccinations?
For puppies in Western Australia, we recommend the receive their first vaccination at 6-8 weeks of age. The second vaccination should be at 10-12 weeks of age, with a final puppy vaccination given at 14-16 weeks of age.
The first vaccination is normally a C3 vaccination (covering Parvovirus, Hepatitis, and Distemper). This will normally be done while the puppy is still with the breeder, and the puppy will normally be microchipped at the same time.
The second vaccination is given from 10 weeks of age. We recommend a C5 vaccination at this point, which covers Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Distemper, and Canine Cough. 14 days after receiving this vaccination most puppies can be taken out in public, though we recommend avoiding places where there are a lot of dogs, such as dog parks. Modern vaccines give good coverage at this age, and early socialisation is important to ensure the puppy develops into a well behaved, social dog.
The third vaccination is a C3 vaccination, and is given at 14-16 weeks of age. We recommend this vaccination as there is a small percentage of dogs who do not achieve adequate immunity from the first two vaccines to cover them until their first adult vaccination.
For adult dogs, we recommend the C5 vaccination at around 15 months of age. From there, the C3 components only require boosting every three years, while Canine Cough is boosted annually. Titre testing can also be considered in place of the C3 components if appropriate.
We believe that every dog should be adequately vaccinated according to their particular lifestyle, so please discuss with your vet the most appropriate vaccination schedule for your dog.
